Inside Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam before an Ajax match

.Planning to watch Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena? Named after the greatest Dutch footballer of all time, this 55,000-capacity stadium is the largest in the Netherlands and home to one of Europe's most storied clubs. This guide covers the best hotels near the Johan Cruyff Arena and alternative options from Amsterdam city centre.

Understanding the Johan Cruyff Arena Location

The Johan Cruyff Arena sits in Amsterdam Zuidoost (Southeast), approximately 8km from Amsterdam Centraal Station and the historic city centre. Unlike many European stadiums tucked into residential suburbs, the Arena is part of a purpose-built entertainment district that includes two major concert venues, a multiplex cinema, and extensive shopping facilities.

This creates two distinct options for visitors: stay near the stadium for maximum convenience on matchday, or stay in Amsterdam's famous canal district for the full Dutch capital experience and take the excellent public transport to the game. Both approaches work well — and this guide covers hotels for each.

The good news? Amsterdam's transport links to the stadium are exceptional. Metro line 54 runs directly from Amsterdam Centraal to Bijlmer ArenA station in just 16 minutes, with trains every few minutes. You'll never feel isolated from the city.

Metro Line 50 also serves Bijlmer ArenA station, connecting southern and western parts of the city (useful if staying near Amsterdam Zuid or RAI).

From Bijlmer ArenA station, it's a 6-8 minute walk to the stadium entrance. Follow the signs — on matchdays, just follow the crowds.

Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station is immediately adjacent to the stadium and served by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) trains.

From Schiphol Airport: Direct trains take just 13 minutes. Intercity services run up to 4 times hourly. One-way ticket: €5.10 (2nd class) plus €1.60 surcharge for disposable tickets.

Intercity connections:

Bus 300 connects to Schiphol Airport via Amstelveen.

By Car (Not Recommended on Matchdays)

The stadium has direct motorway access, but parking is limited on event days and traffic can be heavy.

P+R Johan Cruijff ArenA — Underground parking beneath the stadium. Pre-booking strongly recommended for matches.

Driving time from city centre: 15-20 minutes without traffic.

By Bicycle

Amsterdam is famously bike-friendly. There are bicycle sheds around the stadium with space for 3,000 bikes. The ride from central Amsterdam is approximately 10.5km — a scenic option for experienced cyclists who want to see more of the city en route.

Special Supporter Trains

For high-risk matches (against Feyenoord, PSV, FC Utrecht, ADO Den Haag), a special halt called Halte Amsterdam ArenA is used exclusively for away supporter trains. This keeps rival fans separated and ensures safety.
